I'm Nigel Camp. I've spent more than 15 years making films and video for a living, and in 2014 I wrote The Video Effect to prove that great video isn't about expensive gear. These days I help businesses, comms teams and creators bring video in-house, filming on the phones they already own, editing quickly, and getting results without agency costs.
Who it's for
Businesses, charities and comms teams
You need interviews, event clips and explainers every month, and you can't hire an agency for every one. I'll show your team how to make them properly on their own phones, with a routine they can repeat without me.
Creators getting started
You've got ideas, but your videos don't look or sound the way you want. Most of the time it's sound, light and framing, not the camera, and all three are fixable in an afternoon.
Why trust what I say
I set up my own production company, DevilBoy Productions, in 2011, and I make branded films, documentaries and event coverage for clients such as ICE (the owner of the New York Stock Exchange), CBRE, Kew and Cambridge University Press. I've taught digital film for more than ten years, including at General Assembly, and I've written guides on this site since 2013. When I recommend a light, a mic or an app, it's because I've used it on a job. (How I write the guides.)

The book

The Video Effect (Rethink Press, 2014) is the short, practical guide behind all of this, written in my own words. It covers why video works, the kit you need, getting found and keeping people watching. The kit has moved on since 2014; the principles haven't.
